The Capitol Riverfront - Navy Yard area is Washington DC’s fastest growing neighborhood with trendy shops, restaurants and one of the District’s most popular riverfront parks. Yards Park is used year round by joggers, dog walkers and visitors enjoying recreational events and views.
A lack of public restrooms has posed a challenge for visitors and local businesses. The Capitol Riverfront Business Improvement District (BID) thought a Throne could provide an amenity for visitors and take some of the burden off of local retailers that had become the area’s de facto public restroom.
While businesses saw value in providing a Throne for the public, the BID also wanted insight into the reception among the area’s residents and visitors. They set up a poll outside the Throne that asked passer-byers to weigh in on the need for public restrooms. Eighty-three people responded to the first question and 53 answered an additional four-question survey. Results were overwhelmingly positive.
